Accept it. Whether your blog is new or matured, you would still want it to grow organically. Thus you would put our time and effort into getting more readers. But before you dwell into spending hefty sums of money for Advertisements and other Promotional schemes, why not look at the management philosophies behind the blog reader’s decision making logic.

Consumer Buying Behavior and Blog readers

I have tried to put a direct analogy between the Consumer Buying Behavior and Blog Reader’s Decision Making Choice. The business model is the same, where a marketing department of a big company seeks out consumer buying patterns and what affects it, a Blog Owner would like to know a reader’s reading / surfing pattern and what affects it.

Need to understand

1. Why does a reader subscribe to a particular website?
2. What factor influences a reader’s choice?
3. The Changing patterns in the Blogosphere / Online World

Why you need to understand reader’s surfing pattern?

1. It will help you to gain most out of you Promotional Strategy
2. Help you identify the target segment for spending on Advertising
3. You can better predict how readers will respond to your strategies

Stages in Blog Reader’s Decision making Process

1. Problem Recognition

(Awareness of the need) The reader is not always aware of his need.. It may be created by an advertisement display or a linkage to a particular product. Say, a reader’s need to learn Computers in Depth may arise due to his decision to take a major course in Computers. Before taking the course, he was not aware of his need.

2. Information Search

Search of information can take place in two ways - Internal Search or External Search.

Internal Search deals with Recall Value the reader has with a previously exposed product. Say, the need for gaining computer knowledge would take him to online knowledge banks giving out information about computing which he have surfed in the past. He may also look for sites giving quick tips, tutorials and sharing general views which he have used or seen others used in the past.

Similarly, External Search is initiated when the reader does not have any internal association with the need/product. External Search can be done in a wide number of ways. Search Engine, Directory Search, Bookmarking Website etc.

The internal/external search results in evoked set, which consist of list of alternatives. The need to know Computing results in following choices:

a. Online Knowledge Banks
b. Sites giving tips and tutorials
c. Bookmarking sites with keywords resulting in list of Computing Sites

3. Evaluation of Alternatives

The alternatives the reader has, as a result of search is to be ranked or prioritize. This can be done based on impulse, advantages he sees in a particular site, what features a site provides (RSS Feeds, Newsletter, Community) etc. It mostly depends on his personal preferences. If he is satisfied with the alternative, he may proceed to choose it. Else he retraces himself to the Search phase again.

4. Making the Choice

This step involves the reader landing on the site, going to various sections, bookmarking it or subscribing to feeds or newsletter.

5. Actual Selection

This is the same as making the choice. It may have a lag incase the subscription for the sites are close, payment confirmation is required for pay sites, site is under maintenance etc.

6. Post Selection Evaluation

Outcome: Satisfaction or Dissatisfaction. If dissatisfied, chances are the reader will move to another site and not return back.

Joke

A man who hated his mother-in-law got three wishes from a genie.
Genie: “Whatever you wish for, your mother-in-law gets DOUBLE.”
First wish: “I would like one billion dollars.”
Genie: “Ok but mom get’s two billion.”
Second wish: “I would like an island off the coast of Greece.”
Genie: “OK but mom get’s two islands.”
Third wish: ” I would like you to beat me half to death.”

Monster-in-Law

You love her, you hate her. But the truth is you just can’t ignore her. Let me repeat it again. YOU JUST CAN’T IGNORE HER. And moreover you don’t have to be married to just find that out (Since I am unmarried, my cousins helped me out here).

For every blogger, his blog also holds the same Mother-in-Law status. Most of the first time bloggers starts with a great idea and commits to it in the initial days. But after sometime, as we say, the excitement wears off, the reality starts digging in.

You run out of ideas (well frankly most of us does). You feel the qualities of post you are posting are not the same when you started. The frequency of your posts goes for a toss. That’s when you realize about your potential readers and how you just can’t afford to ignore them.

What about their expectations from you? What about the status you enjoy with them? Who will pay for your credit card bills once Ad revenues drop? Now you are in a fix. Little did you realize that things would get interwoven like this?

Blog or Relationship - they needs a little bit of following to keep it sound and healthy in the long run.

Accept the Responsibility

As uncle Ben from Spiderman @ Marvel Comics said, “With Greater Power Comes Greater Responsibility”. It holds true with us in all walks of life. For those who believe Blogging cost noting, I would beg to differ. Putting up a Blog post does cost nothing. But Blogging does.

You have your online personality at stake. A personality that you have nurtured over a period of time to what it is now. There are expectations. There are followers. They come by to visit your Blog. They like the niche you created. They want to hear more from you. Isn’t it enough to accept more responsibility for it?

Perseverance is the Key

Perseverance is trying again and again and again. Is it difficult to succeed? No. But is it difficult to succeed, whatever the situation? Probably yes. What differentiate the two questions? Its same as asking would you like for once to rank highest in a search engine versus would you consistently like to rank among the highest.

What ever your research methodology is, dedicate time and effort to it for generating output. As Napoleon puts it “Victory belongs to the most persevering”

Look ways to Impress

You don’t have to be rocket scientist to figure it out. As is the case in relationship, you can also impress your readers from time to time.

It can be anything from a small, difficult to notice line to a complete post in itself. I am not asking you to distribute giveaways; I am asking you to focus on the content. For instance, you have a blog talking about great personalities. Try to find unique or hard to find features / characteristics of them.

I like Winsupersite.com by Paul Thurrott for reviews related to Microsoft product. The reason I keep going back to him is because of his consistency, focus on the matter and in depth reviews he provide. Do note that he is not always the first one to provide review on a new product declared / feature announced. But still I keep coming back to him. Get the point..??

Do it from your Heart

Aahh..!! This is the essence of any good blogger. Do it from heart and you reap the rewards it brings. Try doing it for monetary gains and the pressure / pain doubles.

Take Darren Rowse from Problogger.net , how he keeps on churning out post after post of quality material for newbie and professional bloggers alike. He acknowledges his love for the medium in his description. While he has taken blogging as a full time occupation, most of us can’t do it. But that does not stops us from finding.

Enjoy it

Blogging is a constant ongoing activity for a dedicated Blogger. It takes a lot of effort. It is time consuming. Know it in the very beginning. Continue blogging only on topics you love. Accept the responsibility it brings. Be dedicated to it. Try to impress your readers with your effort. And while doing so, keep enjoying all the way.

It’s only once you appreciate your relationship with your readers that you would know what I meant to say. Whether you see her as Monster-in-Law or a Mother depends on you and solely yourself. Take your decision.

For all battered timid souls who could not yet resolve the mystery behind their Monster-in-Law could read the following article for dealing with them

Dealing with Monster-in-Laws

PS: I am not married as yet. Just hope my future mother-in-law does not find this blog while stumbling the net. Love you Momma.

Chess: Tactic vs. Strategy

“In chess, a tactic refers to a short sequence of moves which limits the opponent’s options and results in tangible gain. Tactics are usually contrasted to strategy, in which advantages take longer to be realized, and the opponent is less constrained in responding.” – cited from Wikipedia

“Strategy requires thought; tactics requires observation.” - Max Euwe

It is important to understand that, tactics are short term moves while strategies are for long term gain. A number of tactics can be used to achieve a Strategic goal. Example : Having a plug-in to track number of unique visitors to your blog is a tactic in line to the strategy focusing on evaluating your site’s competitiveness.

Evaluation of Strengths and Weakness

There are a number of ways to evaluate your given position at any point of time. In chess it is done in a wide variety of ways. During evaluation one must consider the value of pieces on the board, pawn structure, king safety, position of pieces, control of key squares and group of squares.

Similarly the strength and weakness of a blog can be ascertain by number of feed readers, number of hits per day, average time spend on the site, your monetization etc. It is important to know how to measure the strength properly. Say for a social service blog, times spend and number of hits would be deciding factor. The same may not be the case for other blogs.

Opening Move

Most important opening move is placing the pawn in the center of the board to control that area. Another move can be to provide castling for the King. Important pieces should be avoided to move too early or too deep into the enemy territory.

Likewise, while creating a new blog or just a new post, care has to be taken as the Blog Title is catchy, or the post content is tempting to grasp the attention of your viewers. Getting good relevant pictures help a lot. Some funny comic strip or Cartoons can do the trick for you.

Chess Board Space

As the name suggest, it is measured by how far you have gained the total portion of the Chessboard. It helps if you have your soldiers spread across the battlefield rather than concentrated in a group at a corner.

Similarity can be drawn with the Blogging Arena, by estimating the reach / penetration of your blog to your intended market. Within your scope of your subject, your blog topics should vary enough to keep you readers come in again and again. If you have a music blog of Hip-hop genre, don’t just fill it up with Eminem and 50cents, cater also to the thousand others who comes under the umbrella.

Defending pieces

It is important to defend one’s pieces even if it is not threatened. The basic idea is that each and every weapon in your arsenal is important.

Often you while posting may have cited examples and words from other places, but forgot to reference it. Imagine a irritated blogger claims you have copied his content and proves it by showing you and your reader database the link to it… It’s the last nail in the coffin.

Exchanging pieces

Exchanging pieces involves capturing a hostile piece of enemy while sacrificing a piece of yours in return. It is usually desirable for a player with an existing advantage as it brings endgame closure and gives your opposition less time to react.

How can we implement it with respect to Blogging? Guest authors, exactly. By inviting guest author, you gain a chance to bring some of his readership to your blog as well. Mind it, this can be both a Win-Win and a Win-Lose situation. First, it is difficult to see why an establish problogger would like to share few words on your blog. Second, more importantly, even if he brings a few readers on your blog, how can you preserve them?

Just to recap, in part one of the series, we have learnt how you can benefit from different

Creative Imagination
Systematic thinking
Decision making ability
Evaluation of situation
Concentrated and lasting efforts

Also in part two above, we have learnt how the following strategies

Evaluation of strength and weakness
Difference between strategy and tactic
Opening move
Chess board space
Defending pieces
Exchanging pieces

Modern Chess is one of the most popular indoor games for young and old minds alike. It has a lot to do with exercising your mind, concentrating; planning moves to out bid your opponents, amongst others. Though it looks simple enough to pass on, it has a long list of advantages for which it continues to remain the numero uno whiz kid game for ages.

Chess

Modern Chess is one of the most popular indoor games for young and old minds alike. It has a lot to do with exercising your mind, concentrating; planning moves to out bid your opponents, amongst others. Though it looks simple enough to pass on, it has a long list of advantages for which it continues to remain the numero uno whiz kid game for ages.

How does it related to blogging? And why should you care to read? Let’s begin asking yourself, why do you blog? The reasons may differ vastly from taking blogging as a free time activity to getting rich quickly, and each and every one of them is fair enough. Now try to answer what you want from your blog? Most of the answers will revolve around getting recognition, having vast user base (loyal readers), generate money etc.

If you look your Online Blogging Arena as a chess game, where you have to outbid your opponent for the most sought after blogging destination, it helps derive some general tips from the game of chess. As the saying goes, “Competition exists on in the minds of participants, what we see in real life is just a reflection of it.”

Creative imagination

Chess involves a lot of creative imagination. You have a small army assigned to you and have to defeat an equally small army of opponent. Now you can go for all out attack or opt for wait and watch approach. You can either lay bait to take down one opponent piece at a time or sacrifice couple of yours to win. Some of your moves would be expected by opponent, and some of it will surprise him.

The same can be done with your Blog. Bring creativity to it. Try a different design. Think of a different Topic. Bring something unique. Why should a reader pick our blog to read among thousand others? Answer to this question alone can make your blog successful. You blog would be self marketing itself.

Best creative idea I found was that of Alex Tew from England , owner of Million Dollar Homepage. Look at the beauty of it. That guy made a million bucks just by capitalizing on the idea of renting a pixel on a 1000 x 1000 grid homepage for advertising for a dollar. At the end of it, he had 1000 x 1000 = 1,000,000 dollars in his pocket even before he stepped out from his college. Surprised… On top of it, he sold the last 1000 odd pixels of advertising by auctioning on ebay fetching a lot more than one dollar per pixel.

www.milliondollarhomepage.com

Systematic thinking

In chess, you cannot roll a dice and work your piece according to the number luck throws at you. Every move you play has to be thought and evaluated. This process is continuous from the moment you decide to play to the moment you win or lose.

Your blog also need systematic thinking in order to survive from extinction. Decide a month’s content in advance (an exception would be blogs on news related topics). Make a decision on the frequency of post and stick to it.

Think what is lacking the most, is it the content focus, quality of material, interest of the topic or something else. May be you are putting all your efforts into publishing and none for advertising the blog. Once decided, develop a systematic and realistic plan to achieve the goal.

Decision making ability

In chess, you start deciding your future moves even before the first piece moves on the board. You know where you want your pieces exactly and then try achieving that position one step at a time. You caneven sacrifice your queen just to get your pawn in the required position.

What it means is that, you have to put your thinking cap on every time you decide anything related to your blog. It can be as simple as adding a widget to your blog or as complex as changing your blog’s theme. Whatever it may be, you have to do a small analysis of the situation and decide if the move is right.

For example: Chances of gaining a higher search engine rank are more if your Site’s keywords are found more often in your Site’s content. Now you have to decide the amount of keywords to infuse so that a fine balance is maintained between your site’s content and your search engine optimization.

Evaluation of situation

One of the loveliest aspects of a chess game is its ability to let you evaluate different situation. One who evaluates correctly and decide his steps accordingly goes ahead to win the game.

This aspect is very important to all Bloggers. As a newbie, before jumping blindly with your blog, you should evaluate if that particular area of market is saturated or not. Entering into a saturated market is will need a radically different approach to come on top. Also to consider would be entry barriers and technical expertise for that particular area.

For Example : I like stars and astronomical phenomenon very much, but don’t blog about it because I don’t have the expertise for it.

As far as the pro bloggers are concern, they should remember that evaluation should be an ongoing activity. After certain period of time, a blogger should have to evaluate his progress. Does a change in approach needed? How is the competition doing? etc.

Concentrated and Lasting efforts

Often in a chess game, you tend to repeat same pattern of steps to gain a particular square / position. That position may be extremely useful for you strategically for winning the game. So you keep all your attentions towards gaining that piece in that particular position, without letting your opponent know about your intentions. I have often been involve in chess game lasting more than a hour, when finally one opponent gave up his concentration and lost the game eventually.

Similarly, when you aim at a particular blog, you have to put a lasting effort towards achieving the target. Say you want a photo blog showcasing your ability with camera, for that you need to have a wide array of clicked photos available with you. Incase you don’t have, the best option is to drop the idea or pick up the camera and start clicking some pictures.

This concludes part one of the two part series.
4. Use pleasant Color Combination

Although what color to choose is extremely subjective, a few pointers can help ease your task.

Professional topics demand a neat and elegant layout with pleasing / soothing colors

Blogs catering to entertainment, fashion and topics related to youth can be experimental with use of bright colors

Blogs about graphic and designing does well if it is creatively laid out with fresh and vibrant colors (shades of blue, orange and green)

Certain colors combine pretty well. Find those combinatiosn and used them well in your content, content background, page background, links, sidebars etc. Try out http://www.colorcombos.com/

Avoid using contrasting or flashy colors. They though make things stand out, are often irritating to the reader’s eye.

5. Use Simple Navigation Style

Now we come to the part, where we focus on how to retain your first time visitor. Navigation forms an important part of it. You should have an effective navigation system placed on your website. Most of the Content Management System or Blogs powered by Wordpress have excellent navigation controls build into them.

Do remember the purpose of navigation control is to provide the reader easy way to move from one portion of the site to another. Breadcrum view and Drop down view are popular navigation styles. It is better to stick one of the popular styles as readers are habituated to it. Also avoid flash navigation modules, as search engines have difficulty understanding them.

6. Make effective use of tags to assist navigation

Once a site grows with content, the navigation system proves inadequate to let user easily move through it. Cases happen mostly with blogs and sites with a lot of articles writer in it.

Tags are words or groups of words associated with a particular page (blog or article) of a site. But the main problem with tagging is how to present it in a way easily accessible to the readers.

Tag Cloud is a wonderful way to do it. Tag Clouds is ideally placed in the sidebar or towards the upper section of the site within confine boundaries to assist users with quick navigation. Refrain from having too large a section devoted to it and vice versa.

Definition

Tag Cloud : A tag cloud (or weighted list in visual design) can be used as a visual depiction of content tags used on a website

7. Use of images

Images assist for making great visual representation. However they are also heavy on the bandwidth compare to text. Thus they increase the page load times, which may rebound users on low bandwidth or dial ups.

Another thing to keep in mind is the image should gel well with the colors used on the blog. If you want a particular background which does not gel with your blog’s color scheme, then you have ot choose one over the other.

8. Synergy

Finally, a well designed blog always is the one that blends all the designing aspects well and makes for a great read. They say “Content is the King” agreed but “A King looks better with his crown”. OK my bad example, sorry but you get the point.

Six simple steps to advertise your blog for free. And it takes just six minutes of your time...

There are no free lunches in this world. But there are discount coupons for sure.

Minute 1: Add your blog name in your signature

Die-Hard Social Web participants today fancy themselves with their avatars and signatures while communicating over the web. Whether it is a social networking site or a community building forum, you will always find these two things related to you and differentiating your online identity from others.

Having signature is not something new. We had this since long back associated with your email. So why not use it for promoting your blog. Put your website’s URL in the signature. It won’t even take a minute and is a one time affair.

Note:
Please make sure if your forum permits having URLs in your signature.
Definition:
Avatar: A digital representation of a user in virtual reality site.
Signature: A group of lines attached to the end of a message that identifies the author and often includes additional information such as contact information, organizational affiliation, or a favorite quote.

Minute 2: Submit your site to a Search Engine

Ok, this sounds dumb. You have already done that. But how many search sites you have submitted to? Ask yourself, is there any search site with global presence that you missed out. If your blog cater to a niche segment or local flavor, have you submitted to the local search engines?

Local search engines and small players have less competition and thus chances of yours listing higher are more.

Minute 3: Submit to free Web Directories

Hunt for free web directories and list your site on them. Make sure you list it in the proper categories assign for it. Last thing you would want is your blog for interior designing categorized under lifestyle section.

Few places to start would be www.dmoz.org, www.worldsiteindex.com, www.domaining.in, www.webworldindex.com, www.searchsight.com .

Minute 4: Create Blog replicas

What is a Blog Replica? Now this may be considered as Black Hat practice by some but the idea works nevertheless. Say you have a blog abc.com on your web hosting space. Create blogs with same name at free accounts like Blogger (abc.blogspot.com) and Wordpress (abc.wordpress.com). These are your Blog replicas or redirects.

Now for every time you post on your main blog, make sure you post the same headline on these blogs and few opening lines of the post. After which you can add a link to your post on the main blog (abc.com). This should not take much time. Later check with Google Analytics to see if any traffic is directed from these sites to your main blog and accordingly decide if you should continue.

Minute 5: Join Yahoo and Google Groups and notify them each time you post

Subscribe yourself to Yahoo and Google groups which cater to your blog’s niche. These group generally have a common group address, through which you can mail to the entire group participants. Every time you write a post which you thing the community would be interesting in reading, send the link to be delivered to the group’s participants.

Be warned though, it may tarnish your image if you send loads of posts or post which does not have mass appeal.

Minute 6: Make sure your post gets at least one Digg / Stumble.

Last tip consist of Digging or Stumbling your self once for your post. Do this only for posts which you think have high quality content and have mass appeal. Also avoid doing this every time.

Digging yourself using another ID or with the help of a friend falls in the grey area. Some people argue that it is a bad practice while some say it is perfectly alright. Whatever it may be, remember at no point of time would you like to get your blog blacklisted by a major bookmarking site.

So that’s it. Six simple steps and in less than six minutes you have started advertising for your blog for free.

Smartblogtips is on the verge of major re-branding. Last week I have been figuring out how to take this blog ahead, before going full blast with the posts. I have been impressed with the average time spend by users for the posts on this blog. I was in two minds, thinking should I continue writing blog post which caters to advance blogging topics which links it to management and other theories. Or another option would be to write tutorials and contents for the newbies.

I went with a fresh mind to the dashboard, rethinking what the next step would be. Finally I decided, that this blog created out of passion, was aimed at helping the newbies and also carrying on discussion with the expert bloggers. Hence I decided to cater both types of users. But what’s noteworthy is the easy classification done so both newbies and expert users can segregate the blog posts easily and get to the required content without much hunting.

It along with brand new style will be updated shortly. The design is ready and will be updated shortly. Keep checking back. Till then, chao.
